About
Tom Stein, Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist

I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. I received my Master’s Degree in Psychology from Cal Poly in 2008. Being a therapist is my fifth career, having been a teacher for 17 years (I hold a Master’s Degree in French from Middlebury Language Schools), K-12 school administrator, and businessperson working with high tech companies as well as for myself as an entrepreneur, and Life Coach. I bring a wealth of experience and wisdom to my work with clients, offering compassion, empathy, and gentle guidance. In addition to my training as a psychotherapist, I am a Certified Professional Co-Active Coach, through the Coaches’ Training Institute. More recently, I have received training in EMDR (LINK) as a direct result of my interest in working with trauma.
My philosophical orientation is existential humanist, which means I believe all people possess the resources—mental, physical, and spiritual—to heal themselves if given the opportunity in a safe, non-judgmental setting. I have a particular interest in fostering both the feminine and masculine sides of a person's personality: compassion and empathy combined with assertiveness and empowerment. I am particularly interested in issues of Domestic Violence, empowerment and identity issues for women.
Currently, I see private clients in San Luis Obispo and Atascadero. I also work as a therapist at the North County Women’s Shelter and Resource Center in Atascadero, I have worked as a therapist at Santa Rosa Elementary School in Atascadero and Paso Robles High School.
I work with individuals, couples, and specialize in working with women in transition, teens, trauma, and EMDR. For more information about me, please email me directly at tom@tomstein-therapist.com or call at 805-881-3136.
